Offline-first · Nothing uploads · Nothing tracks
Your world of stories.
Playing only to you.
A private video player for the films, recordings and family footage already on your phone or tablet. No account. No server. Nothing you watch ever leaves your device, and nothing costs you data to play what you already own.
Built for libraries that already live on the device, not for renting another month of someone else’s catalogue.

The CHIKARA Bingebox mark
Why this exists
A gallery was built to capture moments. Not to watch films.
Most phones in Zimbabwe and across the region already carry a personal library: recordings, downloaded documentaries, family footage, films from friends. Watching that library back should not cost a data bundle, and should not mean handing a viewing history to a server in another country.
Paying twice for what you own
The films on your phone are already yours. Watching them back shouldn’t trigger another charge. Playing a local file should cost nothing.
A camera roll is not a player
No real continue-watching. No folders. No A-B repeat for a section that matters. No search that finds a title you half-remember.
Apps that want to know everything
Sign in. Sync. Let us see what you watch. None of that is necessary to press play.
Power that isn’t always there
A player that sips a battery is useful whenever a charge has to last, in a load-shedding year and a better one.
Privacy as default
What you watch at eleven at night is nobody’s business. No account, no analytics, no server that hears about it.
Honest boundaries
Platform downloads, torrents and site capture were requested and declined. Restraint is the product signal.
The design
A player you can feel, not just tap.
Rebuilt for phones and tablets, light by default. One calm gold-and-teal language shared with every CHIKARA product: a Halo you drag, a dock you play through, one set of line icons, and sound themes you choose for yourself.
Home+ Add

The Halo
A draggable circle at the bottom of the screen. Tap it and six petals fan upward in one arc. The ring breathes while idle and spins faster when open. Drag it anywhere; it comes home after a pause, and you can resize it from the logo menu.
The playback dock
Large, thumb-sized controls: seek, skip ten seconds, speed, A-B repeat, bookmark, screenshot, picture-in-picture. Double-tap either side of the picture to jump ten seconds.
Three sound themes
Synthesised in the browser, never downloaded. Reel: warm triangle-wave clicks. Hush: flat sine tones. Curtain: a pitch-sweeping swell. Or Off. Haptics have their own toggle.
How it works
Four steps. Nothing leaves your device.
The same order the app guides you through, from picking a file to picking up exactly where you stopped.
Add your videos
Pick the files already on your device. Thumbnails and durations are made locally. Nothing is copied or re-encoded.
Organise
Folders, favorites, watch-later, and a search that finds a half-remembered title.
Watch properly
Picture-in-picture, A-B repeat, speed, bookmarks and screenshots. Continue-watching survives closing the app.
Keep it private
No account. No server. No analytics. The library index stays in your browser’s own storage.
What it does
A real player. Not a gallery with a play button.
Every feature below is built and working on your device in the app today. The new 3.0 build is still being tested, and the status table below says exactly where.
Full local library
Import, thumbnail generation, duration detection, folders, favorites, watch-later and search, all stored on your device.
Picture-in-picture
Keep the film running in a small floating window while you reply to a message or check something else.
A-B repeat & speed
Loop a tricky section, such as a language drill, a lecture or a moment in a film, or slow it down and speed it up.
Bookmarks
Mark a moment to come back to. A bookmark stores the exact timestamp.
Screenshots
Capture the current frame as a real image file.
Network stream playback
Paste a direct video URL (MP4, WebM, or HLS where your browser supports it) and it plays. Saving a stream for offline is part of the paid unlock.
Continue watching
Every video remembers where you stopped. Close the app, come back tomorrow, pick up where you left off.
Folders you create
Make your own folders and move videos into them, on phone or tablet.
Works offline
Once installed from the app’s menu, it opens with no connection at all. Your files never needed one.
Battery Saver · Load-Shedding Mode
A true-black mode that actually helps.
Switch on Battery Saver and the app drops to pure-black backgrounds, not dark grey but actual #000. It pauses every blur and glow, disables backdrop filters, and stops the Halo’s breathing and spin. On an OLED screen, black pixels draw less power.
Honest pricing
Everything that plays a video is free. Forever.
Local playback, folders, favorites, bookmarks, picture-in-picture, A-B repeat, speed, screenshots, network-stream playback, sound themes, haptics and Battery Saver cost nothing and always will. One paid unlock covers the rest, and how you pay is up to you.

How the unlock actually works
Signed by us. Verified on your device.
No account. No server round-trip. No phone-home. New keys are signed with a private key that never leaves the owner, and the app checks them against a public key using the browser’s own Web Crypto (ECDSA P-256). Keys already issued in the older BGBX- format keep working.
A single pasted string. The plan and optional expiry date are part of what is signed, so they can’t be edited without breaking the signature.
Lifetime keys, and the dated yearly or monthly form BGBX-TIER-YYMMDD-XXXXX-XXXXXXXXXX, remain valid. A key that worked before must still work.
In practice
No account to forget, no password to reset, no email to enter. Your key works offline, immediately, on any device you carry it to.
The honest trade-off
An offline app cannot stop a key being shared, and cannot revoke one. Expiry on yearly and monthly keys limits that. For a $2–$20 feature, we accept the trade rather than put a server between you and your own films.
Built for
People who already have the videos. They just need somewhere better to watch them.
Illustrative examples, not documented outcomes. No version has been used by a real customer outside development and testing yet.
With a bundle that has an end
Lecture recordings, downloaded documentaries, films from friends. A full semester’s watching without spending data on content already on the device.
With years of home video
A first step. A birthday from four years ago. A wedding. Scattered across storage. Bingebox gives it folders, search, thumbnails and continue-watching.
For whom $2 makes it reachable
A single $20 payment is out of reach. $2 a month isn’t. That’s why the monthly tier exists: accessibility, not extraction.
By a “free downloader” that wasn’t
An app that turned out to be ads, trackers or worse. A product that openly declines features it could have built is itself the trust signal.
With one battery and a long day
Battery Saver goes pure-black and pauses every glow and animation. On OLED, black pixels draw less. A small thing that holds up.
For whom what you watch is yours
No account, no analytics, no server. The viewing history stays where the viewing happened.
What Bingebox will not do
Some features were declined on purpose.
These were requested during development and deliberately turned down. They are not “coming later.” They are a permanent product boundary, and the restraint is the point.
Downloading from YouTube or streaming platforms
Every major platform’s terms prohibit it. A tool that circumvents that isn’t something Bingebox will build, however often it’s requested.
Torrent and magnet-link downloading
A player that also acquires content puts its users in a legal position they didn’t ask for. Bingebox is not that.
Capturing video from any website
A general “record whatever plays in any tab” tool. Considered and declined, because of what it would actually be used for in practice.
These refusals are permanent. If Bingebox ever put a user at risk of a platform ban, a legal issue, or malware bundled inside a “downloader,” the whole reason the product exists would be gone.
Real-world status
What’s live, what’s next.
Every item labelled honestly: Live, Being tested, In progress, Planned or Declined. Nothing is described as done unless it genuinely is.
| Capability | Status | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Bingebox app, build 3.0 (phone & tablet layouts) | Being tested | A full rebuild of the interface with every earlier feature kept. Being tested now; not yet checked on a range of real devices. |
| Local library playback, PiP, A-B, bookmarks, screenshots | Live | Everyday playback tools, working in the app. |
| Battery Saver / true-black mode | Live | Scoped honestly to what a browser can control. |
| Licence key checking on device | Live | Older keys verified on device; new public-key format ships once the owner’s public key is added. |
| Must-Watch List (optional ~95-title starter) | Live | Add your own, mark watched, optional TMDB posters. |
| Installable as a real app | In progress | Works once served over HTTPS; install from the app’s logo menu. |
| Self-serve payment checkout | Not yet built | Keys are issued directly by the team today. |
| Download quality queue | Planned | Straightforward, not yet started. |
| Cloud sync across devices | Planned | Not started until a real, chosen home for the data exists. |
| Platform downloads · torrents · site capture | Declined | Permanent product boundary, on legal and trust grounds. |
Your library, your device
Nothing you watch leaves the phone it happened on.
No account, ever
No sign-up. No email. No profile. The app has no concept of “you” to store, and no password to lose. There is nothing to delete, because nothing was collected.
No server to talk to
Bingebox never phones home about what you watched. The only network calls are ones you trigger: fetching a stream you pasted, or poster art if you’ve added a TMDB key.
Your files stay yours
Video never uploads. The library index lives in your browser’s own storage and nowhere else. Clearing that data clears Bingebox’s memory of your library, on your command.
The name
What Chikara means.
In Shona, a totem is not a brand. It is a living line: a way of naming who you are, who you answer to, and what you are bound to protect.
Chikara is the praise-name and totem associated with the lion (shumba) among Shona-speaking peoples of Zimbabwe and the wider region. A totem (mutupo) is inherited, not chosen. It ties a person to a clan, to a history of ancestors, and to a set of obligations: what you may eat, how you address your kin, and how you carry yourself when the community is watching.
When elders invoke Chikara in praise poetry (nhetembo or clan praises), they are not describing a mascot. They are addressing a man of that totem as one who stands in the lineage of the lion, expected to be formidable, measured, and responsible for those who depend on him. The language is hierarchical and affectionate at once.
That reverence is not celebrity. In Shona moral imagination, the great animal of a totem is a teacher. The lion does not waste motion. It does not announce itself for the sake of noise. It is associated with courage, territorial clarity, protection of the pride, and a quiet authority that does not need to shout to be obeyed.
The mark you see on this product is therefore not decoration borrowed from a zoo. It is a compressed claim about how the work should feel: sovereign on the device you hold, protective of what is yours (your films, your footage, your privacy), and unwilling to sell your attention to someone else’s server. In a region where data is expensive and history is often extracted rather than kept, an offline-first player that refuses to phone home is a small, practical echo of that older idea: what belongs to you stays under your guard.
Shona totem systems are living culture, not a single frozen definition. Clans, praise-names and regional variants differ; elders remain the proper authority on lineage. This page offers a respectful, public-facing account for visitors who meet the name Chikara for the first time, not a substitute for family knowledge or ceremonial teaching.
Ecosystem
One standard of sovereign tools.
Bingebox sits beside design, records, mining, agriculture and workspace tools built the same way: offline-first, device-local, owned by the person using them.
Honesty
What this is, and is not.
- A local video player, not a content service. It plays video you already have and does not source, license or stream anything from anywhere else.
- Free forever for everything that plays a video. One paid unlock covers saving network streams offline and the Must-Watch List.
- No version has been used by a real customer outside development and testing yet: zero users, installs or revenue to date.
- Build 3.0 is being tested. Installability depends on HTTPS hosting, and self-serve payment is not built.
- Battery Saver is scoped to what a browser can actually control, not hardware power management.
- Platform downloads, torrents and site-video capture are declined permanently, on legal and trust grounds.
CHIKARA Bingebox
The films are already on your phone. Give them somewhere good to live.
Free to use, permanently, for everything that matters. One unlock, however you’d like to pay for it, covers the rest. Say hello if you want a key, or just want to talk about it: a real conversation with our team, not a chatbot standing in for one.
